In 2022, the Cape Fear Coalition received the NC Behavioral Healthy Equity Initiative grant to address behavioral health inequities in underserved neighborhoods. In collaboration with HOPE, UNCW JUST US, and youth from local churches and Boys & Girls Clubs, the coalition launched the Photo Voice Project.

Photo Voice is a participatory project using photography to capture communities’ strengths and opportunities. Each photo was paired with a personal caption, reflecting the emotions, thoughts, and stories behind the images. The project culminated in the Through the Eyes of the Camera event, where these photographs were displayed in a gallery. Attendees could engage with the youth about their work and gain insight into their perspectives.

The panel discussion provided an invaluable opportunity for the youth to share their personal experiences and insights behind their photographs. During the discussion, participants spoke candidly about what inspired their images, how the project helped them reflect on their communities, and what they hoped others would take away from their work. The panel allowed the audience to hear directly from the youth, giving them a deeper understanding of the challenges and strengths they see in their neighborhoods. It was a powerful moment of connection, as the youth not only shared their creativity but also demonstrated their growing confidence as advocates for change in their communities.

The Photo Voice Project is a powerful example of how creative expression can promote behavioral health equity and provide a platform for youth to advocate for their communities. Through this initiative, the youth not only developed artistic skills but also strengthened their confidence and sense of ownership over their narratives.

We are proud of their contributions and look forward to more projects that amplify youth voices and create positive change in our communities.
